World Cup: Morocco Is Africa’s Last Hope

BY John Odhe

Morocco faces a massive clash against France today in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals.

No other African country, apart from Morocco, was able to make it to the round of 16 out of the 9 teams that qualified from the group stage to the knockout realm of 32.

As Africa’s last team standing, the Atlas Lions are carrying continental hopes into Boston Stadium, Foxborough, United States of America.

This highly anticipated match is a rematch of the 2022 World Cup semifinal.

Morocco reached this stage by destroying one of the host countries, Canada, and surviving a tough battle with the Netherlands.

Coach Mohamed Ouahbi has built a tight team that defends well and counters quickly. Star defender Achraf Hakimi will be the leader on the pitch this night.

France enters the quarterfinal as a major tournament favorite and they have not proven anyone wrong so far. They have been on fire this summer, scoring 14 goals while only allowing two.

Striker Kylian Mbappe continues to be a dangerous threat for the French attack. The French squad hopes to shut down Morocco’s offense to reach the next round.

The key to the match might be the tactical battle in the midfield. Morocco will miss attacking player Ismael Saibari due to a hamstring injury today.

This puts more pressure on players like Azzedine Ounahi to create scoring chances from tight spaces.

Fans all over Africa are tuning in. It promises to be a tough test, but Morocco is ready to fight for a spot in the semifinals.

Morocco reached the semifinal spot last time. They can replicate same tonight and go ahead to lift the coveted trophy for Africa for the first time.
