Bayelsa Police Hunt Lawless Motorists

BY John Odhe, YENAGOA

The Bayelsa State Police Command has seized over 30 unregistered vehicles playing the roads or operating with concealed number plates.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Iyamah Daniel Edebor disclosed this in a statement, noting that the action was in line with the directives of the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu.

Iyamah said the ongoing arrest and prosecution of offenders and seizure of defaulting vehicles were aimed at curbing the use of unregistered and obscure vehicles by criminals to perpetrate crimes and conceal their identities.

The police chief further explained that covered numbers had made it difficult for security operatives to track vehicles involved in criminal acts, accidents and other road offences.

He added that the enforcement process was not going to be a one-off exercise but a regular operation to crackdown on recalcitrant motorists and car owners.

Iyamah pointed out that plate number remained a vital tool in investigating cases such as hit-and-run, armed robbery, kidnapping and other crimes as it would aid the police in easy identification of crime suspects.

He urged motorists and all road users to comply with the directives as offenders would be continuously arrested, prosecuted and, if found guilty, jailed, adding that those who had nothing to hide should have no reason to conceal their registered plate numbers.
