Bayelsa Warns Against Indiscriminate Logging, Dredging

John Odhe, YENAGOA

The Bayelsa State government has called for stronger public participation in environmental protection and warned against indiscriminate logging and unregulated dredging that could pose serious threat to the already fragile ecosystem.

The Commissioner for Environment, Ebi Ben Ololo, made the call in a statewide broadcast on the sidelines of the 2026 World Environment Day.

The commissioner noted that there was the urgent need to address the worrisome effects of climate change including flooding, coastal erosion, pollution and biodiversity loss.

He said although Bayelsa State was endowed with wetlands, forest and waterways, it remained vulnerable to environmental challenges threatening livelihood and the ecosystem.

Ololo added that the State government under the governor, Senator Douye Diri was implementing environment friendly policies including morden waste management system and climate adaptation programmes.

An environmentalist, Comrade Morris Alagoa also used the medium to warn against blocking of water channels as the rains intensified to avoid flash floods.

He also advised residents to be mindful of how sewages were disposed inorder not to cause environmental health hazards to people within their neighbourhood.
