By John Ovie, YENAGOA

A political activist, Comrade David West has backed the Federal Government of Nigeria over the ban of unauthorized use of ambassadorial title.

The Federal Government banned the unauthorized use of the “Ambassador” title, declaring it illegal for individuals not formally appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to use the designation.

Announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 17, 2026, this move addresses the rising misuse of diplomatic titles by unauthorized individuals and organizations.

According to the announcement, only the President of Nigeria has the constitutional authority to appoint and accredit ambassadors for diplomatic assignments.

The announcement also states that the “Ambassador” title without formal appointment is now deemed impersonation and fraud.
Reacting to the development, West applauded the federal government, describing the ban as long overdue.

The analyst who is also the chairman of the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) in Bayelsa state said the indiscriminate use of ambassadorial title has become a national embarrassment, urging the federal government to be strict in implementing the ban by arresting and prosecuting defaulters.
