Umuahia is in mourning after 15 traders lost their lives in a fatal road accident on Sunday, February 13, 2026, while returning from a traditional marriage ceremony in Enugu State.
The victims, many of whom operated businesses along Bonny Street in Umuahia, had travelled to Enugu to attend the wedding of a colleague. Their journey home ended in tragedy when their vehicle reportedly crashed along the Enugu–Umuahia road, according to eyewitness accounts.
Several passengers were said to have died on the spot, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The injured victims were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, where they are currently receiving treatment, hospital sources confirmed.
The incident has thrown Bonny Street and the wider business community into deep grief, as colleagues and family members struggle to come to terms with the sudden loss.
Traders described the crash as a devastating blow, noting that the deceased were active members of the market community whose absence would be greatly felt.
“It is very tragic. Our friends and colleagues were returning from celebrating a life event, and now we are mourning them. We are still in shock and praying for the families,” said Uzoma Okoro, a fellow trader.
Maria Ude, another colleague, added, “It is a painful day for all of us on Bonny Street. We have lost good people. We hope the authorities investigate the cause so this doesn’t happen again.”
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the crash. However, investigations are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident and forestall similar occurrences
