As part of activities to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Dr. Gift Worlu, paid a visit to the National Youth Service Corps NYSC, Permanent Orientation Camp in Nonwa-Gbam Tai on Thursday.

Worlu’s visit was aimed at inspiring the 2025 Batch B Stream II Corps Members and encouraging them to strive for excellence despite life’s challenges.

Addressing the corps members, the chairman described himself as a “product of NYSC,” stating that the scheme played a defining role in shaping his life.

He recounted his early struggles in education, revealing how he almost lost hope as a child due to poor academic performance and lack of motivation.

Worlu noted that an encounter with a corps member who lived in his compound changed the course of his life. That corps member, he said, became a turning point; rekindling his interest in education and instilling in him the self-belief that led to his current position in society.

Addressing the corps members, the chairman said, “I want you to draw inspiration from my story. Believe in yourselves, work hard, remain patriotic, disciplined, honest, and dedicated. Good things will come your way.”

In appreciation of the warm reception by the corps members, Worlu donated 100 bags of rice to support their feeding.

Earlier in the event, the state NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Moses Oleghe, praised the chairman, describing him as a youth-focused leader and a strong supporter of the NYSC scheme.

Oleghe described the Worlu as a “passionate, generous, and youth-friendly figure” whose personal NYSC journey is worthy of documentation.

The NYSC cord thanked him for taking time to encourage and uplift the corps members, noting that his story serves as a powerful source of motivation.

The visit was rounded off with cultural dance performances and a Man O’ War display in honor of the chairman and his entourage.
