Civil Defence Investigates Bakassi Killing, Assures Residents Of Justice

Following the alleged killing of two youths at Epri Ikang community of Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River state by men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Commandant General of the Corps Abdullahi Gana Mohammadu has assured residents of the community that justice will prevail in the matter.
Public Relations Officer of NSCDC in Cross River , Solomon John Eremi made this known to TNN in a telephone interview, where he disclosed that the corps frowned at the development, promising to thoroughly investigate the matter to ascertain the truth.
He said “right now, the corps at the national level has taken over the case and the commandant general is very angry. We are not happy with what happened; we are not proud of what happened and we are appealing to the people of Bakassi, the families of the victims to remain calm and we condole with the affected family for what happened.
“The men that were involved in this case have already been arrested and handed over to the appropriate authority for proper investigation. Relevant agencies are doing investigation right now and for us as an organization, we are very responsible that is why we are appealing to the public to remain calm because we never envisaged that neither did we pray for such to happen.
“As our name implies, civil defence, defending the defenceless is our very core motto. So right now, investigation is going on”, he added that the Department of Security Service, DSS and the Police are all involved in the investigation, promising that the result will come out without bias as the whole matter will be made known to the public as soon as investigation is concluded.
DSC Eremi further revealed that the men will go for it as soon as investigations are concluded and they are found culpable. He disclosed that the Corps has dismissed officers who misbehave on several occasions, stressing that the Corps does not hide or keep culprits.
Meanwhile, Corporate Affairs Manager of the Port Harcourt Electric Distribution Company, PHED, John Onyi has in a media chat with newsmen in Calabar revealed that none of her staff was killed at Bakassi local government are of Cross River state.

He said they went on head count immediately they heard of the matter and that nobody was missing. He however condoled with the affected families.
Recall that some media outlets reported that one of the victims who was allegedly shot by men of the NSCDC over the weekend is a PHED staff on duty at the time of the incident.
