Vice Chancellor of University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpagu has described sports as a veritable tool for national integration and unity.
Akapgu stated this in his office in Calabar while receiving a team from National Lottery Trust Funds (NLTF) South South Zonal office who visited the institution to present sporting kits to the university.
The VC said sports had the potential of not only uniting Nigerians of different background but could also enhance national development.
While commending the NLTF for what he described as their "huge effort" in fostering national development and unity in the country, he charged them to continue promoting the spirit of patriotism among Nigerians.
He commended them for choosing an area that was in line with national interest, adding that "sports remain a veritable tool for national integration and unity".
Earlier, the NLTF Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Adamu Rabiu said that the agency was established by the federal government with the mandate to take custody of 20 per cent of the proceeds of all national lottery operations in Nigeria for the execution of “good cause project” across the nation.
He said the NLTF helped as an intervention agency through its various good cause projects, which include the procurement and distribution of graded and customized football soccer sports equipment to Universities.
Rabiu disclosed that the "good cause projects" scope have been widened to support grass root development especially in primary Schools across the nation adding that the agency has donated sporting facilities to 10 primary schools in Cross River State.
"The sporting facilities we're donating to University of Calabar today include; two sets of Jerseys, 25 pairs of Football Boots, two pairs of Hand gloves for goalkeepers, 25 packets of tracksuits, 14 pairs of Shin Guards, 24 packets of T-shirts and 25 packets of canvass.
Others are two sets of Beep, 15 pairs of Long socks, two pairs of keepers socks,25 packets bag, 25 packets of small sock, 18 packets of PU", Rabiu said.
