A Corrupt Judge Is Worse Than An Armed Robber

The October 7, 2016 arrest and detention of judges by DSS on allegations of corruption pursuant to the public petition against them marked the beginning of yet a new era in the war against corruption in Nigeria. It marked the anti-climax of several years of continuous accusations of a corrupt Judiciary by past eminent Justices. The era is not limited to the point blank accusations of late erudite Justice Kayode Esho but included the recent period of Salami JCA, the sacked President of the Court of Appeal who was allegedly butted out of the Bench because of his refusal to be part of the corruption bazaar. Today, Justice Salami is free, he is laughing last and perhaps laughing best.

Time To Cleanse The Judiciary

Recently, the judicial arm of government came under severe scrutiny shortly after the Department of State Services, DSS, raided the homes of some judicial officers across the various cadres of the justice system and arrested about seven of them on charges of corruption. Revelations trailing the interrogation of those judges and the letters of two of the arrested judges to the chief justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed attributing their ordeals to their fracas with certain officials of the Buhari administration suggest that there were indeed acts of malfeasance in the hallowed chambers of justice.
