The leadership of the All Progressives Congress in Bayelsa state has called on the police and other security agencies to be on the alert and checkmate the activities of Governor Seriake Dickson ahead of the Saturday rescheduled polls.
APC alleged that the governor was plotting political thuggery and violence, vote buying, ballot snatching and other political and election malfeasance, saying the people of Bayelsa deserved to be given the opportunity to exercise their franchise at the polls under a violent free atmosphere.
The position of the APC in the state is contained in a statement by the Minister of state for agriculture, Senator Heineken Lokpobir, through his special adviser Mr. George Orji. In it, he condemned an allegation by the state governor that he and a former governor, Timipre Sylva were stockpiling arms to cause mayhem during the polls.
Dickson ar a press briefing in Government House on Monday, had accused Sylva and Lokpobiri orchestrating electoral violence in the state.
APC described the accusations by the governor as false, baseless, unfounded and unsubstantiated lies against the leadership of the APC in Bayelsa State.
"The latest of such lies by the governor was during a press briefing on Monday, February 18, in Yenegoa, where the governor alleged that, the minister of State, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri and former governor Timipre Sylvia, leaders of APC in Bayelsa State are known violent persons who deploy political thugs to create panic and rig elections in the state.
"As the mastermind and architect of political violence in Bayelsa State, it is pertinent to remind the governor that he was the one who mobilized political thugs and killers led by Tolu Amatu and Aboy Muturu to the residence of the Honourable Minister in Ekeremor during the 2015 gubernatorial elections with the sole brief of assassinating the minister."
"It is also a known fact that during the same 2015 governorship elections, Dickson deployed political thugs in the major communities of Toru-Orua, Ebedebiri, Angalabiri, Sagbama, Akede, Toru-ebeni, Okunbiri, Ekeremor, Peretorugbene, amongst others to intimidate the voters and engage in ballot box snatching.
"As we speak, Tamarauebi Babofa, a victim of the mayhem unleashed on Sagbama that year, still sadly lives with the agony of his two legs chopped off by Dickson's political thugs who perpetrated the dastardly act."
"As the chief patron of militants and the militia groups in the State, Dickson recently appointed militants as Chairmen and vice chairmen of local government councils in Bayelsa State.
"The most significant of them being the current Chairman of the Ekeremor local government council, Tolu Amatu whose only major resume is the bombing of the Honourable Minster's compound and attempt at his life.
"The same also applies to Pius Waregha, a notorious militant who is the Vice Chairman of the same Ekeremor Local Government Council".
"unfortunately these are the same set of miscreants that the Governor is planning to use to perpetrate thuggery and political violence during this election"
"As governor, Dickson continues to steal and waste the huge resources that accrue to the state, the time has come to invite the anti graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to undertake a full scale investigation of what he has done with the N1.3 trillion that accrued to the state in the past 7 years from the Federal Government, exclusive of the local government allocations and loans.
"For instance, Dickson has continued to bandy conflicting figures as to the real cost of the State airport project.
"At one point he would put the cost of the project at N60 billion, yet at another instance, he would say the figure is N62 billion and at another instance, he would claim that the amount is N80 billion. It is difficult to pin the governor at any credible figure as the real amount of the airport project", he concluded.
