The Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma Federal Constituency seat in the National Assembly is currently being occupied by Mr Douye Diri who has already picked the ticket to run for the Bayelsa Central Senatorial District in the forth coming election. Like in Nembe/Brass federal constituency, the power of incumbency will play no role in determining who wields more influence in the YELGA/KOLGA election.
The contention, as expected, will be between the candidates of the two major political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Progressives Congress, APC. The battle is equally expected to be interesting. The reason is that it is going to be between an old and experienced politician and a youthful political neophyte.
The PDP candidate Prof. Steve Azaiki is a former secretary to the Bayelsa State government, SSG. He is an old hand in the political business. He is not just an old hand, he is seen as the candidate of the governor, Henry Seriake Dickson. Azaiki, who is the chairman, governing council of the Niger Delta University, will be well supported by the governor and his party to ensure victory for the PDP. Another political force that may be of help to Prof. Azaiki is the caretaker chairman of Yenagoa Local Government Area, Mr. Oboku Oforji.
As it were, Oforji is the candidate of the PDP for Yenagoa constituency 1 election into the State House of Assembly. The caretaker chairman is politically influential and has been instrumental to PDP's victories in previous elections in Yenagoa, due to what people call his ability for grassroots mobilization efforts.
Oforji has all the characters that make up the youths of Yenagoa local government under his control and will be ready to mobilize them to prosecute the election. On the side of the APC, the candidate is a youth. His name is Blankson Osom. He and Azaiki are from the Epie/Atissa extraction. Two factors will work for the candidate of the APC. One, he is a youth and will be banking on the 'not too young to run' mantra. Many youths are tired of recycling of the old cargoes. They want to try the abilities of the youth in governance.
A youth from Yenagoa local government area, Fiezibe Olali told TNN that many of the youths in the area were ready to try youthful hands this time. “We are fed up with the recycling of those old cargoes. They have done us no good. Let us try the youth this time'', he suggested.
Another factor that may brighten the chances of Osom to emerge winner of the election is Senator Emmanuel Paulker. Osom is the personal assistant to Paulker, the incumbent senator representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District under the PDP. Paulker had wanted to return to the senate for the fourth time. He picked the interest form at the eleventh hour but was denied the ticket by his party.
Political pundits are of the view that the aggrieved senator may decide to play the spoiler game by working under ground for the APC candidate.
