It was a sad end for an alleged armed robber who was in the habit of terrorising parts of Calabar, disposing people of their belongings. Last week, luck ran out on him and he was burnt to death by a mob.
Eyewitnesses said the deceased was part of a three man gang that operated around the Stream Road, Ikot Effanga Mkpa, Calabar, raping and robbing their victims. He was apprehended when a victim raised the alarm after he was attacked by the gang. While the others fled, the mob held and set him ablaze.
One of the eye witnesses said: “He and his gang have been terrorizing the area for some time now. They rob people of phones and rape female victims, I tell you, walking around Ikot Effanga at night with your phone freely was never safe as these men will harass you and forcefully collect all your belongings.”
Irene Ugbo, thePPRO, Cross River command, was quoted by an online medium to have frowned on the role of the mob and further warned that residents of Calabar must desist from taking the laws into their hand.
“The action of the mob is very unfortunate. People must understand that this action violates the law. Suspects should please be reported to the police, who will accordingly prosecute suspects,” she insisted.
