Barely a fortnight into his second term as governor of Akwa Ibom, political analysts say his body language suggest that Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel may join the ex- governors' club in the red chambers of the National Assembly.
Superior argument, full of strong statistics indicate that the red-lips governor is not favoured by the established rotation and zoning arrangement in Eket senatorial district.
The zoning, which started at the inception of this present incarnation of democracy in 1999, when Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, flew on the wings of the father, the late Justice Egbert Udo Udoma, to the senate in 1999.
In 2007, the pendulum shifted from Ikot Abasi federal constituency to Eket federal constituency, when the wife of the former secretary to the government of the federation, Mma Eme Ufot Ekaete, from Onna Local Government, took her turn as the senator representing Eket senatorial district.
And in 2015, former speaker of the state house of assembly, Nelson Effiong, from Oron Local Government, who later defected to the APC, in Oron federal constituency came on board and lost his second term for Akon Eyakanyi of the PDP, still from Oron.
TNN gathered on good authority that the senatorial office will rotate back to Ikot Abasi federal constituency, where the circle began in 1999. Therefore, with the speculation of Udom's alleged senatorial ambition, analysts have described the development as a political suicide that may rumple the governor's political destiny as he would face stiff opposition from Ikot Abasi federal constituency in 2023, if the speculation turns to be true.
A PDP chieftain from Ikot Abasi, who said he will coordinate his local government for Udom, told our correspondent that a gentleman's agreement had already been reached between the governor and relevant political stakeholders in the area.
It is gathered that the position of the deputy governor is kicked into Eastern Obolo, House of Representatives zoned to Mkpat Enin, which is the vote basket of the federal constituency.
A former commissioner from Eastern Obolo, who did not want to be named, said the governor had the legitimate political right to contest, if after his second term, stakeholders found him fit to represent them in the senate.
According to the political activist, Eastern Obolo would be comfortable with the arrangement, “after all, zoning of any public office is unconstitutional,'' he stated.
However, an immediate past board member from Ikot Abasi frowned on the speculations, describing it as back-stabbing. According to him, it would be a demonstration of ingratitude from the governor to a people, who generously endorsed his candidature against their kinsman, barely three months back.
In his view, Patrick Edoho from AfahaEket said Onna Local Government and particularly Awa clan where Udom comes from, had occupied sensitive and juicy political offices in Eket Federal Constituency right from the military regimes to the present democratic dispensation.
He recalled that apart from the late Brigadier U. J. Esuene, who was a military governor, the first civilian governor, Dr. Clement Isong came from Onna. Mrs.Eme Ufot Ekaete served as senator, Owoidogo Ekpotai also served in the last dispensation as the representative for Eket Federal constituency and currently, Patrick Ifon, a former chairman of Onna Local Government council is representing Eket Federal Constituency in the National Assembly.
Based on this analysis therefore, the political analyst reasoned that it will be a loud sign post of injustice, for any other Onna person to aspire immediately for any sensitive political office in Eket federal constituency and the senatorial district by extension.
