A'Ibom: Outsiders won't choose our Speaker -Dep Speaker

In a bid to douse the rising tension on who succeeds Onofiok Luke as the next speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, the deputy speaker, Princess Felicia Bassey says the 7th Assembly will meet at plenary and elect her speaker and other principal officers of the House come in, 2019 without interference.

She said the legislators would not allow external influences in the choice of their leaders.

Bassey dropped the hint shortly after receiving her certificate of return as elected member, Okobo State Constituency from INEC.

She said:  “For now, members are not thinking of the in-house election. We are busy consolidating on the victory we recorded during the just concluded election.

“We are not thinking of the election. But however, Barr Onofiok  Luke is still my speaker . The truth is that members of the 7th Assembly will meet in June during plenary and elect our speaker and other principal officers of the House”.

Speaking on the allegations she and her only female colleague, Mrs. Charity Ido, elected to serve the people of Ukanafun State Constituency, have already pitched their tent with Aniekan Uko, the deputy speaker said, “I am not aware of that. I still have two months to complete my first tenure as a member representing Okobo State Constituency. So, please, you people should not drag me into what is ahead. The House will decide who will be the speaker by June”.

The deputy speaker  further maintained that the need for women to show wrong political interest in legislative business is very important as the girl child enjoys the highest investments from parents.

She added that parents didn't invest in the female children to lock them inside but to encourage them to aspire to the highest position in life. She expressed the optimism that by 2023, the Assembly will have at least four female lawmakers.
