Okoya Bags Philanthropist Of The Year Award

A governorship hopeful in Bayelsa State, Reuben Okoya has been honoured with the philanthropist of the year award. The award is coming from a Yenagoa  based newspaper corporation, The Light Newspaper.

Presenting the award at a one-day youth convocation organized by the Coalition for Development and Democracy in Bayelsa, Publisher of The Light Newspaper, Mr. Ebi Ozegbe said Okoya deserved the award because of the philanthropic role he played during the 2018 flood.

Ozegbe said Okoya joined other well-meaning Bayelsans to provide succour to flood victims both in cash and kind, adding that he had also provided help to widows and the less privileged as well as given scholarships to indigent students.

Responding, Okoya thanked the management of The Light newspaper for the honour done him, adding that the gesture would compel him to do more for humanity.

He also urged the youths to avoid being issued by politicians who would dump them after using them to get what they wanted.

"I won't say you shouldn't be involved in politics but as you do, always have something to fall back on. That is why you need education, that is why you need a trade", he added.

In his welcome address, Executive Director of CDDB, Dr. Ekiyo Welson identified ignorance and poverty as the bane of the Niger Delta youths.

"We must declare a campaign against poverty and ignorance and collectively resolve to work together as youths, students, women, clergy, intellectuals and politicians to move Bayelsa forward.

Speaking on the theme "building Bayelsa together through participatory democracy: the youth perspective", Welson stressed that the twin problem of poverty and ignorance must be tackled headlong and frontally in the clear direction of knowledge and wealth.
