A total of 14 petitions have been filed before the Bayelsa State Election Petitions Tribunal in Yenagoa over the outcome of the national and state assembly elections held on February 23 and March 9 respectively.
TNN gathered that the petitions are dominated by the two major parties in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressives Congress, APC, although a few candidates from the other political parties also filed their petitions.
While candidates of the ruling PDP have dragged their opponents before the tribunal in areas where they lost elections, the APC did same in places where the polls did not go in their favour.
Other smaller parties who have petitioned their opponents before the tribunal include: the African Democratic Congress ADC, Young Progressives Party, YPP, KOWA party and the National Rescue Movement, NRM.
A list obtained from the tribunal by our correspondent in Yenagoa indicated that the candidate of the PDP for Bayelsa East Senatorial District, Chief Blessing Izagara has dragged the senator-elect, Chief Biobarakuma Degi- Erimienyo of the APC to the tribunal.
Izagara had alleged that he as a candidate and many of his supporters did not partake in the election because electoral materials were hijacked by the opposition, therefore praying the court to nullify the election or declare him winner.
In Bayelsa West senatorial district, it is the candidate of KOWA party, Mr. Akpodi Agagowei that has petitioned the winner, Mr. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo of the PDP at the tribunal, alleging hijack of electoral materials and multiple thumb printing.
Similarly, the candidate of the PDP for Bayelsa Central, Mr. Douye Diri who won the election is facing double petitions from candidates of two different parties.
The candidate of the APC, Mr. Festus Daumiebi Sunday is challenging the victory of Douye Diri at the tribunal. In the same vein, a former Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government SSG, Dr. Boloere Ketebu of the national rescue movement has filed a petition at the tribunal against the winner.
In Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency, Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and candidate of the PDP, Mr. Kombowei Benson is challenging the outcome of the election which was won by candidate of the APC, Mr. Preye Oseke.
Oseke's victory is also being contended at the tribunal by the Young Progressives Party. Both the PDP and YPP have alleged wide spread electoral violence and rigging of the polls and are calling for the nullification of the election.
In a related development, winner of the Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency, Mr. Fred Agbedi of the PDP has been dragged to the tribunal by the candidate of the YPP, Mr. Fuludu Vincent
Also, the outcome of the election into the Yenagoa/Kolokuma federal constituency seat which was won by Prof. Stephen Azaiki is being challenged at the tribunal by the candidate of the YPP, Mr. Obesi Benjamin.
In the same vein, candidate of the PDP for Nembe/Brass federal constituency, Mrs. Marie Ebikake has sent a petition to the tribunal, asking the court to cancel the results of Nembe Basambiri where she alleged that election did not hold.
Ebikake is challenging the victory of the APC candidate, Mr. Israel Sunny-Goli, calling for a rerun in Nembe Basambiri or she be declared winner of the election.
In Ogbia federal constituency, two candidates from different parties are challenging the victory of Mr. Fred Obua of the PDP. They are two brothers, Mr. Rex Ogbuku of the African Democratic Congress ADC, and Mr. Samuel Ogbuku of the APC.
Meanwhile, only one petition from the Bayelsa State House of Assembly has been lodged at the tribunal so far. The petition is coming from the candidate of the APC for Yenagoa constituency 1, Dr. Nathaniel Agoro against Mr. Oboku Oforji of the PDP who won the election.
