Who Succeeds A'Ibom Speaker?

The emergence of Mr Onofiok Luke, the current speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly provoked political heat in the state and collided political interests, until when the storm was over, when he was sworn in as the speaker of the 6th assembly.

In the coming weeks, the new set of legislators would have to choose their leaders and the choice of who should head the state house of assembly is a delicate assignment on the legislative chess board.          The incoming administration, which will be the concluding segment of Udom's administration, is likely to favour a representative from Uyo senatorial district, since the  governor comes from Eket and his deputy from Ikot Ekpene senatorial district.

Uyo Senatorial District has nine local governments viz: Uyo, Ibesikpo Asutan, Uruan, Itu, Ibiono Ibom, Etinan, Nsit Ibom, Nsit Ubium and Nsit Atai. The senatorial district is equally divided into three federal constituencies, namely: Uyo, made up of Uyo, Ibesikpo Asutan, Uruan and Nsit Atai Local Governments, Etinan Federal Constituency, which is made up of Etinan Local Government, Nsit Ubium, Nsit Ibom, while Itu Federal Constituency is made up of Itu and Ibiono Ibom local governments respectively.

Analysts who spoke with TNN said since Itu Federal Constituency is taking the senatorial district shot in the person of  Bassey Albert Akpan,  and Etinan Federal Constituency is currently occupying the seat of the speaker in the person of Onofiok Luke, who has also won the federal constituency election, justice and fair play demand that Uyo Federal Constituency should take the seat of Mr. Speaker.

However, by rotation formula, particularly within the federal constituency, Ibesikpo had the second civilian governor in the person of Obong Victor Attah and Aniekan Uko mounted the speaker's throne in the early days of the of 6thAssembly, though he somersaulted unexpectedly, when his opponent challenged his electoral victory at the tribunal, a position he relinquished to to the present speaker.

According to a school of thought, Uyo, as the seat of the state government, does not seem to enjoy the dividends that is commensurate with their strategic position and contributions to the sustenance of the state government.  They support their agreement with the fact that their member elect, Anietie Eka has the cognate legislative experience to lead the hallowed chambers and that he is level headed, with significant dose of humility.

Political analysts believe that if Eka emerges the speaker, the state house of assembly and indeed, the state will enjoy political stability.
