Students, Civil Servants To Udom: Pay Our Entitlements Now

The victory of Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel has stimulated heated celebration across the different segments of the state, but certainly not among , civil servants and students from tertiary institutions.

Speaking to our correspondent, Stanley Udom, a final year  sociology student from the University of Uyo, Udom has never paid them their statutory bursary since he assumed office in may 2019.

According to him, the governor refused to approve the payment of their bursary since he assumed office. He said “we have not received any bursary from the state government since Senator Godswill Akpabio left office as the state governor.

“The governor does not pay any attention to the plight and predicament of Akwa Ibom students. The money he would have paid us and civil servants, he used it for election. What happened last Saturday clearly showed that the state government is not sincere about developing the state.

Akwa Ibom students are not happy with Governor Udom Emmanuel; even his advisers are not helpful. Nobody advises the governor on students and education affairs.''

They particularly lambasted Otobong Akpan, Special Assistant to the governor on students'  affairs, for not being competent , saying that her appointment was based on political sentiments, not on merit  and competence.

“She was appointed for political convenience. She does not know what is demanded of that office and has never even talked to the governor before. She has no access to the governor, let alone advising the governor”.

And from the state civil service, a deputy director in the state ministry of education accused Udom of being  hostile to civil servants.

According to him, the state government was owing civil servants about 40 months promotion arrears from 2015 to May 2018. He lamented what he described as “callous insensitivity of the governor,  noting that if the March 9 election was not manipulated, the governor would not have won, because he was very unpopular, especially among civil servants and students.

The state commissioner of information and strategy, Charles Udoh could not be reached as at the time of filling this report, but the special Assistant to the governor on students matters, Otobong Aquila Akpan who was contacted on phone, refused to make comments  on whether the students allegations were true or false.

She promised to talk shortly with correspondent, but never answered repeated calls; even text messages sent to her phone was not responded to, for days.
