Ex-Ukanafun LG Boss Joins Akpabio In APC To Evade Murder Trial?

Did Mr Abasione Udomfu, a former transition chairman of Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State decide to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Party, APC, to evade trial over the killing of a former secretary of the local government, Mr Ime Atakpa?

Atakpa was murdered in his farm at Ikot Udo Obobo, his village, on April 16, 2017 by four gunmen who stormed the place in three motorcycles. Udomfu was the transition chairman as at the time of the incident.

There were speculations that Udomfu and Atakpa were not in good terms before the killing of the former secretary. The police in Akwa Ibom had said that Udomfu's name came up in the course of investigations, after some boys had been arrested in connection with the killing.

The suspects were said to have mentioned Udomfu to have known something about the killings. He was consequently arrested and detained, and thereafter arraigned in court. After a while, he was released on bail.

Since his release, he has been relatively quiet, until last week when he decided to defect to the APC, alongside other people from the local government. Incidentally, Senator Godswill Akpabio, believed to be his close political ally, was not present at Ukanafun during the defection.

Also, the APC gubernatorial candidate, Nsima Ekere was not there. But Atuekong Don Etiebet, Bishop Sam Akpan, Amadu Atai and Obong Umana Okon Umana were present.

There have been insinuations that Udomfu may have resolved to join Akpabio in the APC as a way of being shielded from judicial hammer, considering Akpabio's influence in the APC, being the ruling party.

TNN tried to reach Udomfu on Saturday but his phone did not connect.
