Rivers Flood Victims Beg Wike For Help

Residents of Nkpolu in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State have called on the state government to urgently provide them with relief, in view of the havoc caused by flood.

The flood victims told TNN in an interview that their life was at stake, especially with persistent rainfall. They said they could be swept away with their property if nothing was done by the government.

Speaking on the constant heavy rainfall that has contributed to the ravaging flood in the area, the residents said whenever it rained, they were always terrified.

A resident of the area, Gloria Amadi told TNN that the situation was a serious one, such that even landlords were gradually relocating and abandoning their houses.

“This flooding issue is no longer funny at all; tenants and even landlords vacated their buildings because people sleep and

because people sleep and wake up inside flood. And houses in Nkpolu axis are very cheap and affordable now as a result of the flood issue”.

“Government should please assist us because this one is really beyond us, before they come to carry dead bodies.”

Another resident who simply gave his name as Henry said all the drainages were blocked, preventing free flow of water. “All the drainages are bad, water has no means of flowing out, because where the water is supposed to pass through has been sold to rich individuals”.

Shop owners along Nkpolu road lamented about their inability to open their shops because water had covered their entrances, and even damaged most of their goods.

A bus driver, known in the vicinity as Emeka said the flood water had affected them greatly. “The bad road has really affected the drivers.”
