Ahead 2019: Cult War Looms, Gains Roots In Rivers, A’Ibom,… Another Ukanafun Village Under Attack,… KKK Confraternity Terrorise Eket

As the 2019 elections draw closer, cult groups in Rivers and other states of the Niger Delta are gearing up for patronage by politicians seeking elective positions.

In Rivers State alone, no fewer than 102 of such cult groups exist in the state, even though the government has long banned their activities.

Just like in Rivers State, some parts of Akwa Ibom state are still suffering in the hands of cult organisations who now operate as militants, terrorising the people and rendering many homeless.

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike has since proscribed the activities of cult groups. Last week at a meeting with traditional rulers in the state, Wike had said that he was willing to grant amnesty to as many repentant cultists as would be willing to surrender their arms.

TNN learnt that some politicians in the state are still patronising some of the cult groups in the state. In fact, Wike himself alluded to this fact when he alleged in his media broadcast to mark the just concluded local government elections that some APC leaders were arming some of the boys to unleash mayhem during the election. The APC has since dismissed the allegation as unfounded.

The numerous cult groups operating in Rivers State had invaded, ransacked and taken over the control of some communities like Omoku, Ibaa and Ke.

Since arrangements and preparations for next year's elections are still on-going, the cultists who are willing tools at the beck and call of most political office seekers now function as thugs to their pay masters.

TNN findings revealed that a sizeable number of the cult members are on the pay-roll of politicians, especially as they are being supported from time to time, to either kidnap or kill any perceived political opponent of their master.

During the conduct of the chairmanship and councillorship elections in the 23 local government areas of the state, the cultists who appeared at the polling units disguised as hired thugs and laid siege in anticipation of the slightest confrontation from a rival cult group.

TNN contacted the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nnamdi Omoni on the issue, but he did not take his calls.

Cult Groups Terrorise Eket

Tension, fear and insecurity loom in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State following bloody cult groups clash which resulted in the death of five persons while 20 others have been detained.

The cult war which became more pronounced since last week has escalated to neighbouring council areas such as Onna the home of the governor, Udom Emmanuel, Esit Eket and Ibeno Council areas.

When TNN visited Immanuel General Hospital, scores of victims with various degrees of injuries were found in the emergency wards. TNN investigations reveal that a night club in Eket metropolis came under attack last Saturday when a member of Ku Klan Klux (KKK) raided the club and seized people's phones with other valuables from customers who had visited the club to meet commercial sex workers.

Eye witness account confirmed that Mr. Nse Ikott the night club manager was shot and killed on the spot, as he tried to confront the cultists.

TNN further learnt that within the week, six persons have been killed by another cult group who was said to be trying to revenge for Ikott's killing.

The gang members went beserk killing and maiming member of the rival cult group as hostilities between KKK and Vikings confraternity continues in the oil rich council areas of Akwa Ibom.

The police public relation officer in Akwa Ibom State, Odiko Macdon confirmed arrest of 20 suspects and the dead casualties. In his words “so far, 20 suspects have been arrested for investigation to ascertain their culpability in the crime while manhunt for other suspects continues.

Mayhem continues in Ukanafun

Even with the efforts of a combined team of security operatives to contain the activities of militants in Ukanafun, Akwa Ibom State, peace is still far away for the people of Ikot Inyang Udo.

The militants burnt down some houses in the village on Saturday night, and also raided some others, especially the houses whose owners had since fled for fear of kidnap or attack.

However, there has been no reports of attacks at Ikot Udo Obobo and neighbouring villages again, since soldiers took over the village for about two weeks now
