Sunday's declaration by Donald Duke, a former governor of Cross River State, via his twitter handle, that he would contest the 2019 presidential election had attracted queries and accolades from a cross section of Nigerians.
While some hailed him for making the declaration, others merely made mockery of the ambition, querying his relationship with a former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, as well as a recent disclosure on his alleged role in frustrating the government of Goodluck Jonathan, as revealed in the recent book authored by a former finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
Duke who anchored his declaration on the slogan, “everyone matters” asked on Sunday: “You may have heard I'm running for president of Nigeria 2019. Do I have your support?”
That tweet got immediate responses and retweets from his followers. He followed up with more tweets, saying “This is for real. This is for real. We have to create change together. It's up to you and me.”
Teedon4u @udoh_tony , in replying to Duke's tweet said “hope isn't a PR stunt. If it's for real , what a turnaround and a blessings for Nigeria this will be. You got my support. You transformed Cross River State in positive ways.
A certain man who tweeted under the name @BloodMann said guys, Donald Duke is running for president come 2019. This is the time for a true Nigerian to run this country like it should be. We have a mandate to make this happen.
Ubon Isang, tweeting under Ubon_Isang said “we have a formidable alternative to Buhari. A man with credentials, integrity, accountability and stamina to steer Nigerian economy into the 21st century power house. Nigeria has all it takes to compete with China, EU, US &, India.
The others, like Leo Benz who tweeted under the name Leo Benz@LeoBenz8 asked him to declare his party before he could make up his mind about his support or otherwise for him.
Another tweet came from Arewa Liberation @SmartAboky who said “this we await for so long. Thank God it has dawned on us all at a right time. Cross River is mine; @Donald_Duke is mine! No retreat, no surrender.
O to@OtoEbe, in his tweet said “ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, friends and acquaintances, behold I have found my candidate for 2019: @Donald_Duke The only man in the current crop of Nigerian politicians who I can join partisan politics for!
However, the response from @mikerrezzy was different. He said “ I have a few questions sir: Where have you been since you left office? What have you been up to? Why have you chosen to contest? I look forward to your response.
But another tweet from @innocentkayyy said Donald_Duke “is folding his arms like a football coach, I hope he knows Nigeria is a country not a football club.”
