There was pandemonium at Ikot Udo Obobo village, Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State on Saturday morning, when suspected militants stormed the village for the umpteenth time, extorting women at the Anwa Uyo market and killing two people.
They also burnt down a drinking joint belonging to Imekan Okon Joseph, popularly called Ojas. Three weeks ago, the hoodlums had attempted to raze the building but after policemen intervened, the fire was put out. Only a section of the building was burnt
But during Saturday’s revisit, the succeeded in bringing down the building, after they had looted the place. In the course of the raid, they also went after market women at the nearby market and forced them to give them money.
The women were said to have emptied and handed over all they had. When they left the market, they went after motorbike riders, seized their bikes and set them ablaze.
The previous day, the militants had stormed the village abducted a young girl, Idieke Ime Udodung. It was learnt that she was released later in the day after they were paid N100,000.
As they fired shots at random in the village, Mr Sunday Udo Isong as well as a scrap dealer, were hit by their bullets. They died at the spot. But one operative who battled to confront the boys was injured.
Only on Friday, men of the Quick Response Squad were drafted to the Anwa Uyo Junction to remain permanently, as a way of checking the militants.
