Frequent cases of robbery, rape of nurses on duty and other forms of harassments to medical personnels at primary health care centre, Okobo, in the Okobo Local Council Area of Akwa Ibom may have ended, with the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of stolen hospital equipment in the house of a medical doctor in the area.
Parading the suspects in Uyo, during security meeting with all the service chiefs comprising police officers from different formations in the state, state Director of State Security Service, Civil Defence, Navy Commanders and Military officers, the police public relations officer PPRO, Odiko Macdone recalled that primary Health Care Centre Okobo was attacked daily by hoodlums and female Nurses raped on duty while hospital property were carted away.
Macdone said police commenced investigation and discovered that the stolen items such as two deep freezers with inventory number FGN, PHCDA, 2007/003, one generator set and stainless steel hospital basin were found in the house of a medical doctor working in another hospital in Eket, Akwa Ibom State.
The police spokesman said one of the suspects Micheal Effiong Anive alias Kufre, who claimed to be a student of Akwa Ibom State University was the care taker of the building which the medical doctor kept, to protect the property.
He said when the suspects noticed that the police was trailing them; they quickly buried the stolen property in the ground within the compound, planted some plantain suckers on top of it and defecated in the area to scare security agents.
But men of the state police division at Okobo local government arrested the three suspects and invited the village head of the community to witness how the stolen hospital equipment were exhumed while the three suspects were at large.
