Mob Kills Two Armed Robbers In Yenagoa

  • Published in News

Two suspected armed robbers met their waterloo on Sunday afternoon in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state, as they were caught, butchered and stoned to death by a mob.

TNN gathered that three young men armed with pistols and daggers had gone on a broad day robbery mission to Olando Street, Opolo in the state Capital.

According to an eye witness, the hoodlums had succeeded in dispossessing some residents of their hard earned monies, cell phones and other valuables and were trying to escape when the mob accosted them.

The armed robbers threatened to shoot but the angry youths were too resilient to allow the bandits escape. When they saw the resilience of the locals, the armed robbers retreated and took to their heels but the youths gave them a hot chase.

Two of them ran towards the Melford Okilo Expressway. Out of the two, one jumped into a slowly moving tricycle and commanded the only occupant to come down or be stabbed.

The rider of the Keke NAPEP identified as a northerner refused to come down and was therefore stabbed by the fleeing robber. It was at that point that the chasers of the robber rounded him up.

The anger of the mob towards the assailant was said to have been aggravated by the dagger injury he inflicted on the innocent tricyclist who was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

Another eye witness narrated that the second culprit ran across the Okilo road and jumped into the Epie Creek and attempted to swim but could not do much as his pursuers trailed him in a canoe and also caught him.

The angry mob immediately unleashed their anger on the two hoodlums, lynching them on the spot with the use of machetes, sticks and stones.

The incidence attracted a mammoth crowd and caused serious logjam on the Melford Okilo road for several hours. Both drivers and pedestrians made stopover and took a look at the battered remains of the robbers with amazement.

The third robber was lucky to have escaped as he reportedly dashed into somebody's house, hurriedly climbed to the ceiling top and mysteriously disappeared.

All diligent rummaging of the ceiling top in search of the bandit by the people proved unsuccessful. Not even the canisters fired by the police into the ceiling top and the whole house were enough to bring out the escapee.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Bayelsa state police command, Mr. Asinim Botswat told our correspondent that he was yet to be briefed on the incident.

It could be recalled that this medium, last week, published a report on the recurring incidents of armed robbery and other vices in Yenagoa, this Bayelsa state capital.
