From Calabar Garment Factory, Widows’ Tears Of Joy

Magdalene Okon is from Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State.  Even if she has been a widow in the last nine years, she looks and talks like a happy person. She has five children to feed and provide for. But that is not a major concern for her. At least she does not have any reason to lose sleep over this. Since then, the busy community has known no peace. Claims and counter claims rent the air. On the side of government, the sacked workers were mere old cargoes whose services were no longer needed in the civil service. The state government also claimed that those affected were only old women who were employed by the first civilian governor of the state and  of the institution, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha of blessed memory without due process and that they were now over aged and good to go. Out of the affected staff, 375 workers had already had their salaries stopped since November, 2017.

Ayade: After 3 Years In The Saddle

The performance of every government, whether at the state or federal level, in this part of the globe, is partly measured by the number of infrastructural projects executed and employment opportunities created within a time frame and how it impacted the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of the people. Some people measure the success or failure of government partly by these time-tested indices which have far reaching impact on the lives of the people. In this case, road construction, provision of hospitals and other health facilities, schools, water supply, physical infrastructure and industries go a long way in giving a government a pass mark or otherwise in the estimation of the vast majority of the people because the presence or absence of these facilities affect everybody's well-being directly daily.
