Apprehension In Ukanafun After Iso Akpafid's killing

The killing of the Ukanafun terrorist, Iso Akpafid  and some of his gang members does not seem to have ended the era of criminality in the local government, although relative peace  is gradually returning. When TNN visited the area last weekend, it was calm and quiet; nobody discussed the incident residents and visitors were cautious especially when they see a strange face.

Cross River Governorship Race And The Illusion Of Zoning

Cross River State was created on May 27, 1967 from the then Eastern Region of Nigeria by the administration of General Yakubu Gowon. A change was effected in the name from South Eastern State to Cross River State in 1976 by the Murtala Muhammed military junta. The name was derived from the Oyono River which stretches from the Cameroon Mountain and emptied itself in the Atlantic Ocean. The river was a major trading route in the South – Eastern part of Nigeria. The present day Akwa Ibom State was created from the old Cross River in 1987 by the General Ibrahim B. Babangida military regime. The state consists of 18 Local Government Areas drawn from the 3 Senatorial Districts – Southern, Central and Northern Senatorial Districts respectively.

But on Monday, January 15, a day set aside to remember Nigeria's fallen heroes, Akaninyene Jumbo Ukoh, popularly known as Iso Akpafid, native of Ikot Ibekwe village, a school drop-out, an orphan, was killed, ending many months of criminal activities by his cult gang.
